Claudia Beroukhim announced as competition winner
Beroukhim, who recently completed her Master of Music degree from NYU, will receive a $1,000 commission prize for a new work, which Orpheus will premiere in October 2026.
Claudia Beroukhim is a New York City-based composer from Atlanta, GA. She earned a Master of Music in Music Theory and Composition at NYU Steinhardt and her Bachelor of Music degrees at the University of Georgia Hugh Hodgson School. With a background in jazz, classical, indie, Persian, and Jewish styles, as well her work as a pianist, singer, and songwriter, Claudia is interested in the accessible power that music composition holds in expressing emotional truth. With influences from any and all musical styles, she aims to explore this expression through meaning, color, and narrative in her music. Claudia often draws inspiration from extra-musical sources such as text, poetry, visual art, film, and, most recently, intangible concepts that reflect emotional or sensory experiences. And as a singer herself, Claudia has always been enamored with vocal and texted music in particular. She has been commissioned for various vocal works and was selected to compose music for the UGA Hodgson Singers (dir. Daniel Bara), the San Antonio Chamber Choir (dir. Rick Bjella), and the Winona State University Treble Chorus (dir. Colleen Chester).

Elizabeth Myong, KERA, January 15, 2026
Inside University Park United Methodist Church, the Orpheus Chamber Singers fill the chapel with the warm harmonies of contemporary American composer Shavon Lloyd’s “So Breaks the Sun.”
The echo of their voices is one of the sounds from North Texas that was featured in the BBC’s special “American Roadtrip” which aired this past weekend to UK audiences. BBC Radio 3, which primarily broadcasts classical music, selected Dallas-Fort Worth as one of four stops in the U.S. — along with Boston, Philadelphia and L.A. — to highlight American music amid the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. OnStage NTX ~ Review of “Horizons”
Gregory Sullivan Isaacs, October 23, 2023
…The singers responded with the precision that always has hallmarked Orpheus’ work, with Burnett’s impressive and subtle overlay of nuance and emotional empathy. The wide-ranging program certainly put the choir through its paces. The incredible variety of languages…and historical periods presented a huge stylistic challenge. Burnett and his musically supple group of singers transversed this treacherous landscape with élan. Read more.
AAM Conference Review of Orpheus’s June 13, 2023 performance
Ned Tipton, Director of Music Ministries, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, New Canaan, CT
“Only one word is necessary to describe their concert – extraordinary. Their program was wonderfully creative, mixing well-known works with lesser-known gems. Particularly notable were Howells’ Take him, earth, for cherishing and Willan’s An Apostrophe to the Heavenly Hosts. The latter, which I did not know, is Willan at his most brilliant, unfettered by the need to “sell.” This work is accessible only to the most capable of choral ensembles: the Orpheus Chamber Singers would fit at the top of that category. As I listened, I couldn’t help wishing that I could hear them sing other choral monuments – the Rachmaninov All-night Vigil, the massive anthems of Tallis and Mundy, or the Schoenberg Friede auf Erden. Bravi! to J. D. Burnett and the Orpheus Chambers Singers. We are grateful for the gift you gave us. I, for one, won’t soon forget the evening.” Read More
